My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

By Bob Steiner

Having grown up in the American West during the nineteen forties and fifties, I had been raised under a system  of government, which I was taught  was based on  Judeo-Christian principles.  As I progressed over the years through public school and college studies this belief  was reinforced when I read such documents as The Mayflower Compact (the first known set of written laws and covenants to govern the new world), The Declaration of Independence, and The U.S. Constitution. All three of these documents point towards a recognition of a special relationship between our government and GOD.

Looking back over the years, it now seems we were rather naive then. In those days even the most minor infraction of the norms of  the society was enough to shatter one’s reputation.  Divorce was accepted but not spoken about. An illicit love affair in the community might have been whispered about, but would never have been discussed in the press. Even a philandering U.S. President or two got by with out having his personal affairs publicized.   A drunken driving  arrest might have taken place, but no one talked about it in the public venue.  In short, man’s failings happened but the news media and society interested in promoting  the positive aspects of our lifestyle, tended to play down  all but the most flagrant violations of the status quo.  Life for most people was good and  society benefited.

I grew up believing that my heroes have always been cowboys , firemen, policemen, soldiers, or doctors.  John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry seemed to be the prime role models for our lives .   It may seem hard to imagine,  but these were Hollywood stars who lived their lives without ever becoming involved in any of the scandalous conduct that we read about daily in today’s movie and music industry.

Drugs were not a problem. I can remember one instance when just a rumor of an actor smoking a Marijuana cigarette caused him to be replaced in a movie he had been cast for. While Homosexuality may have existed in those days, it certainly was not publicized.  If anyone would have used the word “pedophile”,  people would have thought that some sort of  bicycle enthusiast was being discussed.  You might say that we were very out of touch and  naive in those days.

Now, moving ahead some fifty years, we have become completely liberated.  Sex seems to be the most  used “noun” in today’s media.  Few actors, music stars, or sports figures  have not spent time in drug rehabilitation centers and you can hear detailed reports of their excesses on the news every night.

Now, after four weeks of having my TV tell me how great a recently deceased singer was, despite the fact that he was known  to have young boys as bed partners and was a heavy drug abuser, I am really confused.  I find it very difficult to view a drug-using sexual degenerate as someone who has earned the respect and veneration being accorded to him.

Yes I guess my heroes have always been (and will continue to be) Cowboys, policemen. fire men. soldiers ( who have led  clean lives and are a credit and role models to our civilization). I hope there are still a few others around who share my sentiments.

Sarah Palin, A Liberal’s Worst Nightmare!

By Bob Steiner

As one who finds himself  daily reading political articles or watching the “Doom and Gloom” cadre of professional political “strategists” on the likes of CNN. MSNBC, ABC, as well as FOX News (in a few instances), I am totally dumbfounded by the amount of press coverage that Ms. Palin has received since Senator McCain and she lost the election last November.

Any logical person would think that , having been voted in, our liberal friends would now be in an elated state of euphoria, and they would be celebrating their success and the “achievements” they have made on behalf of the American People.  Their stabilizing our financial markets, nationalizing parts of the automotive industry, and perhaps, implementing a new “improved” national health plan are efforts totally in line with the programs of their communist socialist icons, Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. For some reason though, they seem to be bothered by the actions of a provincial governor from a “backward state.” Then on July 25th, Ms. Palin chose to resign her office.  While she cited the usual political grounds (“I want to spend more time with my family”) for her decision, there may be other reasons for her action.  For example, Alaska  will have a vacant U.S. Senate seat in 2010 which she could run for.  In that position she could strengthen her Washington  base. Following this there will be another Presidential election in 2012 where she could run as the candidate for the number one or two slot.  Her Options are really open.

Since the last election the liberal attack teams of the media seem to continually harp on her “lack of experience.”  How soon they forget! It seems to me that it was just a year ago that the liberal press was touting the accomplishments of our President.  Specifically, he had worked as a Communitry Organizer for an  affiliate of “ACORN” and had also been a member of the U.S. Senate for more than 150 days. These do not appear to be stellar qualifications that I, personally, would want to put on a resume being submitted for a “Chief Executive Position”, such as President. I guess his strongest personal asset is his oratory skill  (providing his teleprompter doesn’t fall over).

Ms. Palin, on the other hand, has had several years experience as a Chief executive, first as a town mayor and then as Governor of Alaska for the last two and one-half years.  It should also be noted that even after she announced she was resigning, as governor, she had a job approval rating of 54%.  She, too, is a gifted orator and has been filling her political war chest with sizable contributions from many sources.  She has not only committed to assisting conservative candidates of her own party in the next election but also to work for like-minded  conservative candidates who are not members of her party.

After all the hoop-la being  raised in the media about this “not qualified losing candidate” ,  one could almost surmise that the liberal power brokers, as well as a few “sexist” members of her own party,  are scared to death of this gifted politician.  In the months to come, I  expect to see even more vicious attacks against her and I am looking forward to her active participation in the 2010 election.

Santa Fe County Acts Further For Renewable Energy

By Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009)

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

Those of you who have read this blog on a regular basis have seen information regarding special legislation for renewable energy financing having been passed during the last legislative session. Basically, the senate bill allows for counties and municipalities to set up financing schemes for solar and other renewable energy projects for residences; while the house bill only allows counties to set up a financing option for solar only. Here is the final Senate Bill NM-SB0647 and here is the final House Bill HB0572

The County of Santa Fe has posted preliminary information on their website and passed two resolutions at their meeting on July 28, 2009. The resolutions can be accessed here and here. Following the links will take you to Santa Fe County Resolutions 2009-126 and 2009-127 which were filed in the Santa Fe County Clerk’s office on July 29, 2009.

An aide to the Santa Fe County Commission advised that she was informed that if all goes well, the program may be ready to go in forty-five (45) days.

You can sign up here for updates or to be considered for the program … or both.

Equestrian Special Olympics Coming To This Area

You can obtain results and other info at this link. Our apologies for the delay!

The following article and flyer are posted as a community service by the Folks at GadaboutBlogalot

HORSES—DUST—THE SMELL OF LEATHER—ADRENALINE—GOOD FRIENDS

Come On…….You Know What I’m Talkin” About…….

COMPETITION!!!!!!

By Cathy Brunson

You’re sitting in the bleachers, between events, just watching people meander by and notice a couple riders striding across the arena. They’re sorta dusty and sweat streaked; jawing about a hard ride around the barrels. One feller slaps the other on the back and exhorts; “Nice Ride!”. But that smile says it all—it’s so big it could reach from Farmington to Carlsbad!

Sound like a scene you’d observe at any High School rodeo or maybe at your local gymkhana? That, my friend, is also the scene you would observe at any Special Olympics Equestrian practice or competition. Just a group of guys and gals who love to ride horses and have a driving desire to compete. And the benefits for these riders are enormous!

You have most likely heard of Special Olympics. Well, Equestrian is one of the 12 Olympic-type sports offered by Special Olympics of New Mexico to children and adults with intellectual disabilities who deserve to live the message of inclusion, acceptance, possibility and hope. Volunteer coaches, horse handlers, and parents help accomplish this task along with the generosity of folks who lend their horses to these special riders. Free of charge.

There are Special Olympic Equestrian teams throughout New Mexico. These teams are not social clubs or therapeutic riding programs; but year-round training and competition programs. Though, riding horses can provide a combination of sensory, motor, physical and neurological input for riders, our main focus is training for life through sports. All athletes are required to engage in an extensive training program for a minimum of eight weeks prior to competition. Riders are classified by abilities and include: A Riders (no speed limitations), B Independent Riders (walk or trot only), B Supported Riders (walk or trot with assistance), C Independent Riders (walk only), C Supported Riders (walk only with assistance), D Riders (walk on lead line with side walkers).

As these riders develop riding skills they also grow physically, mentally, and socially. Riders increase physical fitness and gain new abilities and talents while grooming, tacking, and learning horsemanship. One example of how riding horses can literally transform the physical body is proven by one young man who was born with no muscular strength. While therapies proved invaluable, his interest in riding and competing on horseback gave him an avenue by which to gain strength and have fun. Said rider has gone on to compete in the Special Olympics International Equestrian Games in Ireland!!

From a parent’s perspective of a Special Olympian rider, I appreciate the mental challenges that are overcome through riding horses and training for competition. As my daughter learned and practiced over and over again the patterns for running Barrels, Pole Bending, Figure Eight Stake Race and Working Trail her mental capacities were challenged and improved. As a benefit, she also learned to be determined, persistent, courageous, responsible, and became self-confident. Her listening skills improved and her patience was tested as she learned and practiced for Stock Seat Equitation and Showmanship in Halter Class. Right now all you parents are wanting a phone number for this amazing program, right?? Visit www.sonm.org or call 800-371-5525 or 505-856-0342 for more information.

No Extra Pow Or Punch

by Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009)

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

In a story that is sure to bring out a lot of controversy, it is said that organic food provides no additional nutritional value over “regular grown food.”  The article shown here punch or pow is not likely to change the mind of organic aficionados as most purchase organic products for environmental and animal welfare reasons in addition to consideration of perceived nutritional  benefit. She who must be obeyed (SWMBO, my wife) and he who must obey (me) have had a running verbal battle about all of the issues of organic versus what I call good regular food. It probably comes as no surprise that my opinon is cast away by SWMBO like so much detritus tossed onto a mildewed and squashed pile of “good regular food.”  The argument for and against organic has ragedcontinued in our home ever since folks began to tout its benefits over “good regular food.”

The same can be said regarding good tap water and bottled water. She adores bottled water and I crave tap water. See here for a common sense approach to plastic water bottles and the stuff in them. I am satisfied with our tap water because it seems to have a little natural carbonation and it gives me a feeling of victory because I am drinking what people pay extra for, which is mineral water with extra fizz. Maybe there is a barrel of water at the foot of the rainbow. That is, since all of the negative articles have appeared regarding the chemicals leached from the plastics in the water bottles, I have caught SWMBO sneaking full glasses of our tap water and hiding them in various places in our home. In regards to water, I believe I have bathed SWMBO in the clear waters of the truth and we may see an increase in our disposable income due to weaning SWMBO from the bottled stuff.

I took a brief respite from writing the above in order to water what I assume to be SWMBO’s organic squash which are located in our back yard. I harvested both zuchinni and yellow squash after watering the rabbit acting things and when I took them into the humble abode, I found that my water heater (located in my humble garage) has sprung a bottom leak. I’m sure it because SWMBO takes to many baths and showers and has worn the poor thing useless. But, I dare not express such to her. Physical throw-downs are not fun and neither are bruises. So, what started out as an article about organic food turned out to be a sad lament about my water heater. SWMBO is in Texas and I’ll have to sell shares to the house in order to find enough dollars to buy a new water heater. Since this is New Mexico, maybe I can make a solar one from adobe and plastic water bottles. That’s the ticket!

An Example Of Toughness And Fortitude

I received the information shown below in an email and fell in love with Molly at first glance. I left the text as it was in the email and posted the images as best I could. The text is heart-wrenching and inspirational as are the images. The email asked that it be passed on.

You can google or  here’s a link that will take you to much more on  Molly The Horse

Ya gotta meet Molly…

mollyimage001

Meet Molly. She’s a grey speckled pony who was abandoned by her owners when Hurricane Katrina hit southern Louisiana .  She spent weeks on her own before finally being rescued and taken to a farm where abandoned animals were stockpiled. While there, she was attacked by a pit bull terrier and almost died. Her gnawed right front leg became infected, and her vet went to LSU for help, but LSU was overwhelmed, and this pony was a welfare case. You know how that goes.

But after surgeon Rustin Moore met Molly, he changed his mind. He saw how the pony was careful to lie down on different sides so she didn’t seem to get sores, and how she allowed people to handle her. She protected her injured leg. She constantly shifted her weight and didn’t overload her good leg. She was a smart pony with a serious survival ethic.

Moore agreed to remove her leg below the knee, and a temporary artificial limb was built. Molly walked out of the clinic and her story really begins there.

‘This was the right horse and the right owner,’ Moore insists. Molly happened to be a one-in-a-million patient. She’s tough as nails, but sweet, and she was willing to cope with pain. She made it obvious she understood that she was in trouble. The other important factor, according to Moore , is having a truly committed and compliant owner who is dedicated to providing the daily care required over the lifetime of the horse.

Molly’s story turns into a parable for life in post-Katrina Louisiana ..The little pony gained weight, and her mane finally felt a comb. A human prosthesis designer built her a leg.

The prosthetic has given Molly a whole new life, Allison Barca DVM, Molly’s regular vet, reports.

And she asks for it. She will put her little limb out, and come to you and let you know that she wants you to put it on. Sometimes she wants you to take it of too. And sometimes, Molly gets away from Barca. “It can be pretty bad when you can’t catch a threee-legged horse,” she laughs.

Most important of all, Molly has a job now. Kay, the rescue farm owner, started taking Molly to shelters, hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers. Anywhere she thought that people needed hope. Wherever Molly went, she showed people her pluck. She inspired people, and she had a good time doing it.

‘It’s obvious to me that Molly had a bigger role to play in life, Moore said. She survived the hurricane, she survived a horrible injury, and now she is giving hope to others.’

Barca concluded, ‘She’s not back to normal, but she’s going to be better. To me, she could be a symbol for New Orleans itself.’

This is Molly’s most recent prosthesis. The bottom photo shows the ground surface that she stands on, which has a smiley face embossed in it. Wherever Molly goes, she leaves a smiley hoof print behind.

Edgewood Police Department Volunteer Chaplain Unit

It is uplifting to see that the Edgewood Police Department has seen fit to establish a chaplain unit. Work has already started in order to make the unit fully operational and a Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) document has been compiled.

The unit has adopted a mission statement and guiding principles for their operation. From what I have seen, much work and thought has gone into the documents which make up the SOP. For example, the following points cover the qualifications:

  • Appointees must have a recognized ecclesiastical endorsement. The endorsement shall certify that the appointee is a fully ordained or qualified priest, rabbi, minister or pastor of religion in accordance with the appointee’s traditions with a minimum of two years pastoral experience.  The appointed must have been engage in (or retired from) a denominationally approved vocation.
  • Will have prepared themselves morally, spiritually, emotionally and educationally to present themselves as a professional and compassionate ambassador of God to the Edgewood Police department and to the community of Edgewood.
  • Have served in the community for at least one year.
  • Possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license
  • Have never been convicted of a felony.
  • Completion of a background check by the Department.
  • Participated in/completed a least two (2) orientation ride-along
  • Satisfactorily attend and pass a CPR and basic First Aid Class

I have posted the above in order that interested parties may determine whether they meet the basic criteria and decide whether they wish to become a very important part of the police department and the community. If those interested wish to go forward for more information or to start their application process you should contact Associate Pastor Leonard Navarre through the following email address Leonard@valleyviewnow.com or by phone at 505-281-8373.

Thanks to all who helped to organize this effort.

Big – Mouth Grape

by Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009)

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

Some of you may remember that the folks who make Kool-Aid© had a flavor they named Big-Mouth Grape©. The foregoing recollection came to me as I read a story in the Washinton Post (click for story) regarding statements made by VPOTUS Biden during an interview.

It appears that Biden pulled out all stops when it came to denigrating all things Russian when he opened his big mouth. This certainly gained us no friends in Russia and it was disingenuous. Disingenuous, especially since POTUS recently traveled there and received less than presidential treatment while there. Perhaps this is POTUS’s method of getting his digs in after his less than stellar performance while he was in Russia. Say, a tit for tat … sort of. If the Russians didn’t trust us before, they sure don’t trust us now.

Whatever it may have been, I would feel much safer if VPOTUS tucked his ample tongue inside his cheeks and never again let it fall over his silly lips. Big-Mouth Grape© or Kool-Aid© either moniker will suffice for VPOTUS.

An Envoy And A Foreign Secretary — Some Commentary

by Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009)

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

According to this story, the United States envoy to Afghanistan and the British Foreign Secretary believe it is a wise idea to bring some Taliban fighters into the mainstream of Afghan society. This homecoming, or perhaps re-infiltration, is agreed to, in principal, by the current president of that country.

This idea seems to include options for the terrorists to denounce their former actions and to pledge not to indulge in such for the future. Open to consideration would be to allow  some to serve as elected officials and Afghan armed forces members. The possibility for this program’s implementation seems to be far in advance of intelligent (perhaps, dumb) and comes just after thousands of new British and American troops have  entered into the fray.

While it is likely true, that many of the Taliban terrorists are simply fighting for the money and come from poor illiterate stock, the leadership and tacticians are well entrenched and educated in the ways of extreme terrorism and will not take the bait of the deal. Or, they will take the bait and infiltrate the government, so that eventually, the government will be another oppressive Islamic regime that punishes harshly for the smallest of infractions. The plight of the weakest, in terms of political power and physical strength … in other words, the women and children, will again be increased after some strides have been made to equalize their rights and abilities to allow them to be participatory members of Afghan society.

While it is a portion of the current military mission of the United States in Afghanistan to quietly convince ordinary citizens to resist the Taliban, we should be ever thoughtful of the muck and mire diplomats and other civilians made of our Viet Nam efforts. I am in favor of fighting the Taliban, until they are no longer able to resist, but if our joint allied military initiatives and actions are to be hamstrung by another McNamara like deceiver, then we should get out of Afghanistan and “gird our loins” closer to home.

Hillary: No, Not, Zilch, Zero, Nil, Negative Chance That

by Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009)

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

Iran will ever have nuclear weapons. Saying that the United States and others will never allow such to happen, our Secretary of State made statements that seem to have little wiggle room. But, that is what diplomacy operates on … words coined to allow the diplomat to act when the other side blinks. During the same interview, seen here, she also took time to excoriate North Korea and their reticence to get off of the nuclear train and to halt their childish and silly threats.

We have heard these or similar declarations in the past and can only wonder if this is the line drawn in the sand; or is it really a line drawn on a chalkboard, only to be erased. I would guess the latter and more. For one, how can we be sure that Iran has not crafted their first and many more nuclear warheads, or in the alternative their Russian, North Korean or Chinese friends have gratified Iran’s nuclear palate and stocked them up with nuclear warheads. Whose intelligence are we relying on? Would it be ours, the United Nations’, Israel‘s or some other ally. Say an ally that has not been tested under real tight circumstances. Whatever the intelligence and from whence it came, we cannot allow our estimates to be wrong to any degree. Nor, can we just wait and hope that waiting is the right action.

Israel is the one in Iran’s nuclear sights. Iran’s insane leader or leaders have stated so  on several occasions.  Do we continue to pull back on Israel’s reins or do we allow them to protect against certain annihilation when Iran’s President and mullahs push the buttons that will deliver the death.

There’s an old saying: Fish or cut bait. That is exactly what the United States needs to do with Israel and Iran. As to North Korea, they are playing us like a tightly strung guitar. The question might be, do we restring when a string or strings breaks or do we hit their nuclear plants and take them out with what is left of the guitar.
