Remember … You Do Remember, Don’t You

The tax that Santa Fe County voters passed to help sustain the unsustainable goes into effect today. Although voters in the Edgewood and Stanley precincts voted the measure down by a large margin today, Edgewood area residents and visitors to our town, will begin to pay a gross receipts tax rate of 7.75% for any goods and services (except for food consumed off premises) purchased within the town limits.

I won’t go into the other taxes that the northern part of the county has voted in over the past several years (most of which will provide little, if any, direct benefit to Edgewood) but, this new tax is especially egregious because it goes to keep the Rail Ruiner halfway (maybe) viable. Don’t expect to enjoy a  ride on the Ruiner if you live in this area … the road doesn’t run anywhere near here. There probably is not a remote chance that it ever will; therefore, that 1/8 of one cent will continue to benefit people you do not know, with which you have nothing in common — except you both breath air and bleed money to Santa Fe County and the State of New Mexico.

Not only should you expect to hike a great distance in order to ride on the Ruiner, but you should prepare to continue to prop up the bird that truly belongs to the cuckoo family. Think about the hole in your pocket each time outside governments increase your cost of living.

Perhaps, it really is time to think about a new county?

ATT0000564thjulyMany of us can say, “Not much.”  Maybe some of us are not interested. Perhaps some feel we’re just too busy today. And, today runs into tomorrow, tomorrow runs into next week and next week runs into next year.

While the poster displayed here was produced for World War II and rallied ordinary citizens to do their part to support our troops and the war effort, its plea is appropriate for today and anytime our nation is at peril. It reminds us that the business of defense of our country and the safety of our citizens should be paramount in all of our minds and efforts.

Today, we have mostly relegated our defense and safety to our organized military and there are few organized citizen efforts aimed at accomplishing our goal of continuing freedom and safety.

Exceptions to the above, developed recently, are the many “tea parties” organized throughout our nation. Readers of this blog will know that we announced one such party that is to occur in Albuquerque this July 4th.

In an effort to further spread the information, we again ask that you click on the following link which will contain all needed information for your attendance and participation. Albuquerque, July 4th, 2009 Tea Party. ABQ Tea Party
