I’ve held off commenting on the Cambridge, Massachusetts police/professor/POTUS issue. But, I might as well present my initial feelings about the POTUS’s judgmental call. A call he made after not having been aware of most, or perhaps any of the FACTS. Sure, he said he was not aware of all of the facts, but he apparently felt that he had sufficient facts enough to run his mouth about something which was sure to set off a maelstrom of concern. Yes, concern from every minority who heard or read of his remarks. Incidentally, I will mention in passing that the police may well be the smallest minority that is expected to remain non-plussed, above insult and unabashed regarding anything which is said to them by the richest of the rich, poorest of the poor and the rottenest of the rotten. Is this expectation wrong? Perhaps not, but it is extremely difficult for a human, no matter the training, to tolerate such day in and day out. So, in my opinion Obama won one for the “grim ripper” Wednesday evening when he let let his mouth write a check his supposed good will can’t redeem.
He could have let the question pass completely, when it was posed to him, or he could have spoken the truth and said that he did not have sufficient knowledge to speak to the issue and then he could have just shut up. It is a matter for local authorities, unless and until, a finding of a civil rights violation is made. The POTUS went on to decry profiling in so many words and other actual and perceived possibilities of police misconduct in the realm of race relations. But, the race card seems to fall out of the deck under its own power and it needs no shuffling or slinging to be dealt … such, in my opinion, is the case here.
