The talk by Mark Lloyd, the President’s  chief czar for diversity at the FCC, is that there should be less talk and more diversity. Such a credo comes close to impinging  on freedom of speech in the United States. It certainly does nothing to encourage the  pursuit of the free exchange of ideas among friends or (dare we say, enemies?).

One of the FCC Commissioners has more than a little to say about Mr. Lloyd’s statements and beliefs, starting with this:

Federal Communications Commissioner Robert McDowell said Tuesday that statements about regulating freedom of speech in broadcasting made by FCC Chief Diversity Officer Mark Lloyd are “troubling.”  Everyone should be concerned when federal regulators have the power to impact freedom of speech, McDowell added.

In the past, Mr. Lloyd has stated in a book written by him;

“It should be clear by now that my focus here is not freedom of speech or the press,” Lloyd wrote. “This freedom is all too often an exaggeration. At the very least, blind references to freedom of speech or the press serve as a distraction from the critical examination of other communications policies.”

“[T]he purpose of free speech is warped to protect global corporations and block [government] rules that would promote democratic governance,” said Lloyd.

Prologue to a Farce: Communication and Democracy in America”  (Mark Lloyd, 2006)

We have commented on Mr. Lloyd’s ideas in another article and we have also commented on recent laws passed in Argentina which deal with media ownership and regulation.

Soap’s In — Soup’s Out

Matthew Getting Mouth Washed Out With Soap

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

A Mom and her boyfriend are in deep suds after the boyfriend put a bar of soap in the mouth of the Mom’s daughter. The soap trick or cure, for those of you who were sent to time-out and have never experienced the taste of  Lifebuoy®, is I guess, a throwback to what some would say is a harsher time. In short, the “cure” is used by moms and dads the world over to cleanse the devil induced speech from the mouths of their charges. Now it seems, the charges may accrue to the parents.

There is a woman, known in my household as, “she who must be obeyed” (SWMBO) who used the “cure” on our oldest child (a daughter) and our youngest child (a son). They are now in their forties and have experienced no lasting physical injuries, but do have a lasting phobia toward anyone approaching them with a bar of soap. Apparently in these times, SWMBO and the onlooker (me) of the inflicted punishment, would be thrown under the jail. SWMBO could be thought of as an habitual offender when it comes to her infliction of the “cure” and I relate all of this now, only because I am informed by my attorney that the statute of limitations has run out on SWMBO’s violations and neither of use face prosecution for being cruel parents. :>)

There is more to the story of the young  daughter. It seems she vomited the soup from the soap in the course of the punishment and was then taken to the hospital where hospital staff notified authorities. I have known children who could “hurl” at will when they wanted to malinger in some way, i.e., skip school, escape their assigned chores or miss a dental appointment.  Did malingering enter into the case at hand? Of course we don’t know and we aren’t likely to find out, but you might want to check with your attorney before you tell your little angels that the soap is in.

Another Health Care Reform Possibility From The States

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (Me...

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

According to think tanks from 33 states there are very viable alternatives to health plans now being bandied about by Congress and President Obama. The following is to be the meat and potatoes of the plan.

Patient-Centered Health Care Reform:

  • Leverages Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). HSAs empower individuals to monitor their health care costs and create incentives for individuals to use only those services that are necessary;

  • Allows interstate purchasing of insurance. Policies in some states are more affordable because they include fewer bells and whistles, and consumers should be empowered to decide which benefits they need and what prices they are willing to pay;
  • Reduces the number of mandated benefits insurers are required to cover. Empowering consumers to choose which benefits they need is only effective if insurers are able to fill these needs;
  • Reallocates the majority of Medicaid spending into simple vouchers for low-income individuals to purchase their own insurance. An income-based sliding scale voucher program would eliminate much of the massive bureaucracy that is needed to implement today’s complex and burdensome Medicaid system and produce considerable cost savings;
  • Eliminates unnecessary scope-of-practice laws and allow non-physician health care professionals practice to the extent of their education and training. Retail clinics have shown that increasing the provider pool safely increases competition and access to care and empowers the patient to decide from whom they receive their care;
  • Reforms tort liability laws. Defensive medicine needlessly drives up medical costs and creates an adversarial relationship between doctors and patients

I don’t believe any of these ideas are entirely new and different from those considered to some extent in past years, but I especially lean toward something like the next to last and last bullets.
