Everyone has heard of Carlsbad Caverns found in the Carlsbad, New Mexico area, but have they learned of the other “caverns” found in the salt beds in the Carlsbad and Artesia areas.
The salt caverns are the unnatural, but to be expected, result of oil field operators pumping water into the salt formations, then using the resulting brine in drilling operations. The story found here will educate on the causes and effects and also show images about the problem which is not unique to New Mexico.
