President Obama talks alone with Senate Majori...

The vote turned out to be 60 for and 39 against, but not before Sir Harry cast a vote that was half theater and half tragedy. Perhaps his initial vote was to show his true feelings for the albatross that mucked the Senate floor and still hangs from Reid’s neck. In the end, we can say he didn’t have the strength of character to retain his “no” vote and for a brief moment he demonstrated how great a charlatan he is. With 59 fellow Democrats, he has sufficient company.

Here’s a story regarding the final (for now) process. The Republicans? McConnell says it is not over and the fight continues.

I think it is a case of, “Never have so many been lied to by so few.” At least one organization and some Republican Attorneys General have announced that there will be a challenge to the bill on constitutional grounds.

More Photovoltaic Energy For New Mexico

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

New Mexico Business Weekly reports today that SunEdison LLC is in line to provide Xcel Energy with a substantial amount of solar energy over the next twenty years.

Xcel is a company which supplies energy to Southwestern Public Service Company, which has a portion of its distribution system in Southeastern New Mexico.

New Mexico Business Weekly’s article can be read in its entirety by clicking here and you can read more about SunEdison and Xcel from this article quote:

SunEdison, a subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials (NYSE: WFR), supplies 8.22 megawatts of solar-generated electricity to Xcel from an installation in Alamosa, Colo.

Xcel (NYSE: XEL) is an electricity and natural gas company, with customers in eight western and mid-western states.

And here is a new story reporting on New Mexico’s Public Regulation Commission which may open the doors to more solar development in the state.

Here is a story, where neither XCEL, nor Public Service Company of New Mexico came out of their respective regulatory forays with clean minds, although they did try to cabbage on to all the clean energy … or, so it seems.

New Taxico — State Of Confusion

New Mexico state flag

By Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009).

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

The State of New Mexico is looking for money to plug the holes in their budget.

You remember back in 2003 when Governor Bill and the New Mexico legislature removed the gross receipts tax from most food items.  Good, I’m glad you remember, because that means you also remember the shell and pea trick they played on us when they turned right around and passed a one-half cent gross receipt tax on every other purchase.  So, if you brought a big-ticket item, such as a state of the art television, or computer system … or any number of other expensive products, then you could have ended up paying much more than if the food tax had remained and the one-half cent tax had not been passed.

Don’t forget the transportation tax that we in the Edgewood and Stanley areas voted down, but which passed anyway, because the Santa Fe and Taos areas carried it, presumably in one of the Rail Runner cars, or in one of the little or big buses which scuttle back and forth all over northern Santa Fe County and Taos County.  Add to this all the other “little”  gross receipts taxes in Santa Fe County and you soon find that you are taxed beyond comprehension, and certainly beyond desire.

But, just when you might be thinking taxes are  out of consideration, the governor’s State budget task force has other ideas. And what are they touting as a possible way to help balance the budget?  You got it, a tax on food.

According to an article by Steve Terrell in The New Mexican on the 17th, folks on the task force who should shudder at a suggestion of taxing food have come straight out, without apology, to recommend the food tax:

Terri Cole, executive director of the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, said reinstating the gross-receipts tax on food will be a priority of her organization during the next legislative session.

As we indicated earlier in this article, the food tax cut was mostly bait and switch and others seem to agree with us according to Mr. Terrell. When some members of the task force, who are members of the business community, said they didn’t get a chance to look at cutting government expenses:

This provoked member Bill Jordan, director of New Mexico Voices for Children, to argue that cutting taxes in the first years of the Richardson administration contributed to the current budget crisis.

“Most of those tax cuts were at the urging of the business community,” Jordan later told a reporter. “They got the benefit of those tax cuts. Now that we’re in a crisis they don’t want us to raise taxes, they want to cut services to working families.”

While I can’t wholly agree with Mr. Jordan, because there is room to cut fat from any government, the fact remains our citizens had more disposable income when the food tax went away. At least to the extent that the one-half cent shell and pea tax didn’t apply to their purchases of food. Certainly, the governor and legislature share a great deal of the blame for our large deficit. That is, if it is true that the State budget has increased some fifty percent during Richardson’s administration. We also know that we have a train that burns a deficit each year and there is probably no hope that it will come close to breaking even … ever.

The situation faced by New Mexico citizens might be comical if they didn’t have to place a financially toppled State back to an upright position. Nothing was said by those interviewed regarding tips or suggestions submitted by citizens. Perhaps everyone was busy paying their own obligations.

Edgewood Now In Renewable Energy Finance District

By Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009).

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

In the past we have written about or provided information about statutes passed during the last regular New Mexico legislative session which allows New Mexico counties to enable renewable energy financing districts. You can read our previous articles here and here.

Santa Fe County (SFC) did push forward and has passed enabling legislation and a resolution to begin the program as envisioned by the statutes passed by the legislature. This SFC work has in turn, allowed Edgewood to pass a resolution requesting to be a part of the Santa Fe County Renewable Finance District.  The resolution is Resolution No. 2009-48 – Renewable Energy District. As of the posting of this article, the resolution is not available on the Town’s website, but will likely be posted sometime next week.

Edgewood Town Councilor John Abrams has stated that with the passing of the resolution and its acceptance by SFC, Edgewood citizens can now utilize the funding mechanism formed by the finance district. SFC personnel and Edgewood staff will schedule public announcements, information sessions, and workshops for sometime in January. Santa Fe County citizens residing outside the corporate boundaries of Edgewood will likely come under SFC’s resolution and regulations.

We will post further information as it becomes available, but if you want to research the statutes you can start with this page.  The applicable statutes run from 5-18-1 through 5-18-13. You may also waqnt to access some SFC work information to be found here which includes a link to frequently asked questions (FAQS).

Thanks go to the Edgewood governing body and staff for ensuring that Edgewood citizens will be able to take part in the program which addresses residential solar, wind and geothermal energy projects. Special thanks to Councilor John Abrams for sponsoring the resolution.

Belly Deep To A Tall Elephant

As the POTUS and other global warming experts suffer under 10 centimeters (4 inches) of wet, white snow, folks in Alaska must be wondering what the fuss is about. Alaska’s only oil port is loaded with over five feet (probably over six feet by now) of the heavy stuff, which must be belly deep to a tall elephant. The roads and the harbor are both punished by the ample white, but other than that, according to the story linked above, “Valdezians” seem not worried about climate change or global warming.  At least they don’t have a 15,000 capacity building full of global warming  touters such as that in Copenhagen.

While Potus, Madame Flutterby and other United States government officials bask in the lukewarm weather of Copenhagen, where the hottest thing seems to be the air coming from proponents of drastic climate change, folks in the northeastern part of the United States are waiting for copious amounts of snow to hit them. Weather Underground reports this and other forecasts speak of up to 10 inches of snow for NYC from a storm that previously flooded parts of Florida, and up to 20 inches for our nation’s capitol.

Meanwhile, folks at the global warming conference go about smelling burnt sulfur and calling each other to task for not doing enough or doing too much.  And, The Little Mermaid, positioned on her base, just freezes her tush while waiting for global warming to arrive and all the politicos to leave.

I guess we in New Mexico will have to settle for a carp or Silvery Minnow stuck in the shallows of the Rio Grunge Grande.

Dog Gone … Walking

Faith walks on four two legs and has done so since she started walking. Born in 2002, her life and destiny were saved by a family who saw good in the small life they held and cuddled.

The seven years or so since her birth was spent by Faith the Dog dispensing inspiration and faith to our military and others. As we come to this season when peace and good will is almost universally celebrated, what not let a little warm animal bring peace and faith to those willing to honor them up with an embrace.

You can read about and see Faith here. By the way, no one is sure when Faith was born (similar to another faith) but her birthday is celebrated on December 22nd.

You still have time to celebrate a little Faith before the “Birthday” passes. Pass it on.

At A Time …

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

These are times when we need a song like Willie Nelson’s:

At a time when the world seems to be

Spinning hopelessly out of control

There’s deceivers and believers

And old in betweeners …..

Hands On The Wheel: by Willie Nelson (click the link) Red Headed Stranger Album 1975

Well, maybe we should say, the progressives need a song such as this to help them through the nights of indecision.  A moderate Independent, such as Senator Joe Lieberman (I-Conn) rides to the rescue of the Senate health bill after being promised that the public option will disappear from the bill. Then Howard Dean, the wild orator, asks that the bill be dumped in favor of starting over. Then there’s Senator Burris (D-Il) who swears not to vote for the bill if the public option is not included in the bill. The POTUS warns that the United States will suffer bankruptcy if  health care costs are not reined in, i.e., the health care bill remains stuck to the floors of the House and Senate.

Add to this mix, a heaping spoon of Democrats, who say they will not vote for the bill for various reasons, and a barrel of Republicans who wouldn’t touch the snake with a ten-foot pole, and the bill, “seems to be spinning hopelessly out of control.”  Then Madame Flutterby Pelosi, comes out of her cocoon and announces that she is loaded for campaigning and the bill won’t pass until January 2010.

And, we can’t forget the SEIU rabbit. It hopped out of the hat before its ears could be grabbed.

It is enough to cause us to think of foundering, floundering and flummoxing in one fell “swell” swoop. Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sway.

Alleged: 22 Million Bush White House Emails Found

South Lawn of the White House
Image via Wikipedia

By Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009).

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

That is a tub full of emails and a little simple math shows the revelation as absolutely astounding. This “find” is in addition to the emails already released by the Bush administration or those disclosed through other avenues. Let’s see if we can drill-down and see what the figures really mean. Keep in mind, we are looking at emails from the Bush White House … or so it seems:

  • 22 million emails found
  • 8 years of Bush administration
  • 2920 days in 8 years
  • 8178 total emails average per day
  • 341 emails average per hour
  • 5.68 emails per minute

I find the magnitude of the number, plus all the other emails previously accounted for, difficult to wrap my county-fried brain around. It is absolutely mind-boggling how the Bushies were able to find time to gore Gore, fix elections, lie about WMDs as accused, still manage all else  required of them, AND shoot emails and other documents all over the world.

This is one story I will be watching — I hope you will too. If you’re going to watch it, I guess I should leave you with a link to the story. Click here . Thanks Associated Press via Yahoo.

But, wait … there’s more. According to this article, the span of time the emails cover is at most two years, from 2003 to 2005. This information puts a whole new number to the numbing amount. Let’s see:

  • 22 million emails found
  • 730 days in two years (2003 to 2005)
  • 30,136 emails per 24 hours
  • 21 emails per minute

And, to make it even more difficult to fathom CNN reports this in the link above:

Monday’s settlement allows for 94 days of e-mail traffic, scattered between January 2003 to April 2005, to be restored from backup tapes. Of those 94 days, 40 were picked by statistical sample; another 21 days were suggested by the White House; and CREW, and the National Security Archive picked 33 that seemed “historically significant,” from the months before the invasion of Iraq to the period when the firings of U.S. attorneys were being planned.

So, even if my math was right based on a full two years, in actuality we may be looking at something in terms of numbers per day that is even more gargantuan than I thought, depending what the story is reporting in actual number of emails over the total number of days they cite in the above quote.

Just another day in the neighborhood of topical trivia, or not. Hm, Hm, Hm Hm, Hm!
