T. Boone Pickens has dropped a large portion, if not all, of his wind turbine plans announced in May of 2008 for the Texas Panhandle. Citing an ongoing economic crunch, the attractiveness of cheap natural gas and the absence of adequate high voltage electric transmission lines and facilities, Pickens revealed that he has cut his order for turbines in half from manufacturer General Electric. His original order of 667 turbines has been reduced to 333 and he plans to use the 333 for projects in Minnesota and Canada.
The ability to transport wind or solar generated capacity from remote areas is perhaps the paramount problem facing distributors of renewable energy and we have previously reported on the problem and viable, but expensive solutions. It might be said that our “fruited plains” offer the fruit of electricity, but the market at the point of picking (no pun on Pickens) is sorely lacking.
