A state agency gets a request under the New Mexico State Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) for emails about a particular program or pending program.  The agency sends a few scant emails and provides information that they have destroyed other emails that were over 90 days old.

Given everything which has occurred in New Mexico in the recent past with state agencies and officials pertaining to criminal activity, secret meetings and multiple requests for information citizens are entitled to obtain under the FOIA, you would think any New Mexico state agency would know that there is a retention period for public records.  What’s more, they would know and understand that after the retention period the records cannot be destroyed, but must be submitted to the state records administrator to be secured and/or placed in the state archives, if other arrangements have not been approved by the records administrator.

Our New Mexico Economic Development Department (NMEDD) apparently believes that such records can be destroyed after 90 days without so much as a report or other notification to the state records Administrator.

When will all state agencies, their directors and staff quit violating state laws and regulations and begin to serve the citizens instead of their own self-interests.  There is no excuse for any agency to have a records custodian that is not well-versed in records management.

Perhaps it is time for serious repercussions for actions such as this. There are some state agencies that strictly adhere to the law and regulations regarding records in their custody.  It is actions such as those taken by the NMEDD that tend to give other state and public agencies an undeserved reputation as slacker agencies.

Can It Be — Something Wonderful Is Happening

According to a report from PR Newswire a substantial majority of our younger folks and Americans overall, are solidly pro-life and against abortion. Stronger yet, they say that abortion is morally wrong.

The story opens with these two paragraphs:

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — On the eve of the 37th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion throughout the United States, a new survey shows a strong majority of Americans believe abortion to be “morally wrong.”

“Millennials” (those 18-29) consider abortion to be “morally wrong” even more (58%) than Baby Boomers (those 45-64) (51%). Generation X (those 30-44) are similar to Millennials (60% see abortion as “morally wrong”). More than 6 in 10 of the Greatest Generation (those 65+) feel the same.

The poll, which some may attack as sectarian, was conducted by the Knights of Columbus — Marist survey in December 2009 and early this month (January 2010.)  Here’s hoping that America has not only turned a corner, but has made a complete “U” turn, and its citizens will one day turn completely away from the support of abortion.

Republicans May Wish On One Hand And Scat In The Other

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

Reports and rumors of the Republican party bringing Tea Party activists (TPA) into the Republican Party sheep pen,  may be comtemplated, but having been involved with the Tea Party, I believe I can say that  TPA folks are in no hurry to embrace any party.  I believe most TPA people are just that … people.  Individuals who have grown tired and weary of the mainstream media and mainstream politics.  What they have in common is not political party membership (although I am a Republican and many others of us are serious party members) but a love for the United States Constitution and the ideals which have made this country what it was and can still be.

A report from Fox News has this quote which seems to point out the problem Republicans have with understanding TPA:

“If you have to run a focus group to understand the tea party movement,” the GOP source said, “you never will understand the tea party movement.”

As one member of the TPA , I am not hard to understand and I am neither radical, nor a “racist”,”birther” or “truther.”  There are some TPA that are admittedly one or perhaps all four, and probably some who are far more to the right, than Marx and Alinsky were to the left.  I try to check facts and point out false information, no matter from what direction it might arrive.

So, we (TPA) do not march in lock-step, nor do we take orders from some central headquarters.  What suggestions we do follow, we follow in the interest of maintaining our position in the world and having an impact on all executive, legislative and judicial levels from local to national, and perhaps even the world. And, we hope to accomplish the foregoing through adhering to the United States Constitution and not a progressive manifesto.

The U.S. Has One — So Does Venezuela

Silly Boys. When the Haitian earthquake devastated much of Haiti, Pat Robertson credited the cause of the earthquake to Haiti’s pact with the devil.  The tinfoil hat must have flown from Robertson to the pate of Señor Hugo Chávez of Venezuela.

According to Chávez, the Haitian damage was caused by the United States when a powerful explosive device was exploded off of the coast of Haiti. Chávez accused the United States of play God and further claimed that the explosion was a prelude to the explosion of a similar device which would cause damage to Iran.

Edgewood Food Pantry & Civitan Clothing Distribution, Notice Two

POSTED AS A COMMUNITY SERVICE BY GADABOUT-BLOGALOT

Hello Everyone-

After a crazy couple of months, Edgewood Mobile Food Pantry is back on schedule.  Roadrunner Food Bank is providing the food and we will distribute it on January 28th from 5:00-7:00 pm to anyone needing help.  I’ve attached the flier.  If you know of anyone that might benefit from this program, please let them know.  I’m also asking for help passing the flier out or distributing it to businesses or churches.  I won’t be able to hit every church or business and I know they will be a valuable resource in reaching families that can benefit from the pantry. This month, we will have enough food to feed 150 families.

A little bit about the program:
We are paying a shared maintenance fee of $.05 a pound for the food.
$125 will buy 2500 pounds of food, allowing 50 families to receive 50 pounds of food each.
There are no income restraints-anyone needing the food is welcome.
All donations will go back into buying food from Roadrunner Food Bank.

At the bottom of the e-mail, there is a link to a video Roadrunner made about the necessity of mobile food pantries.

Results from last month:

148 families were served.

There were 559 people in those 148 households.

Thank you to our sponsors- Valley View Church, Rita Loy Simmons and Wal Mart.

We also had 40+ volunteers-the pantry wouldn’t have been successful without their help.

Valley View Church has once again offered their space for the event and Allen Elliot brought cases of food for our distribution this month.  Thank you, sponsors!

In the eight months this pantry has been operational, 3456 people in 940 households have been recipients of food from Roadrunner. Thank you for all of your support, we couldn’t operate without help and donations from others.

New this month: Edgewood Mobile Food Pantry is happily joining with the Edgewood Civitan Club to provide a free clothing exchange.  Please see the attachment for more details.  We welcome the opportunity to expand the services available to the community.  Thank you, Edgewood Civitans, for providing such a valuable service!

If anyone is interested in helping by either volunteering their time or sponsoring the event, please contact me.  My phone number is 281-5364.

Last, but not least, the following link is to a video from Roadrunner.  It’s a great video and some of our clients are featured.

Albuquerque Named Tops For Movie Making

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

New Mexico Business Weekly has published an article which relates how Albuquerque has gained recognition as the number one place to shoot movies AND live.  According to this article, the magazine MovieMaker has heaped praise on Albuquerque, naming several areas and facilities which offer the ultimate for moving making.

I’m sure everyone is serious with their praise, but it does come when some are suggesting that incentives should be reduced, or taken away altogether for the movie industry. When you’re are counting pennies, as New Mexico lawmakers are, a dollar saved can come as a welcome sight.

Edgewood Library Schedules Book Signing

POSTED AS A COMMUNITY SERVICE BY GADABOUT-BLOGALOT

Ms. Peggy Martinez, Edgewood Librarian announces:

The Library has scheduled a book signing:

Author:  Marie Claire Peck (real name Rose Marie Everding), of Sandia Crest

When:  Saturday, February 6, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm

Marie Claire will be signing copies of her books, Don’t Tell, Baby and Before the Music.

The books may be purchased separately or in a package.

Why I Began Writing…

By Marie Claire Peck

I have always identified with people that are often overlooked.  Drawing on my own experiences with abuse, I began writing fictional stories with a touch of realism in them, with the hope that someone will read my books and realize that they are not alone.

I began writing in 2007 after a strange dream.  I dreamt that words were running through my head.  When I awoke, I felt compelled to sit at the computer.  The words came as fast as I could type.  They still come when I least expect them.

New ideas are still forthcoming.  I haven’t quit writing yet!

A portion of the proceeds from these sales go to Albuquerque Christian Children’s Home and the Haiti Relief Fund through the Red Cross.
