Astounded am I, and chagrined too, over some of our legislator’s insensitive and yes, ignorant attempt to place a tax on white flour tortillas. Any New Mexican with a modicum of sense and vision would recognize that tortillas of the white flour variety are a staple among many families in New Mexico. The white flour tortilla is color and race blind as it is enjoyed by all New Mexico citizens no matter their color, sex, sexual preference, or national origin.
Look, the white flour tortilla is sacrosanct in New Mexico; second only to low property taxes. The tortilla, white bread, and peanut butter are each a major food group in and of themselves and any politician that fails to recognize this cultural and almost scientific fact will certainly see their political career vanish. If a representative or senator conspires to place this unfair burden on all New Mexicans, they tax at their own risk. Not only will this flat bread (tortilla) tax have an effect on every consumer in New Mexico, but people will buy fewer tortillas and this will have a huge effect on the manufacturers of tortillas.
Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to wait to see how this TT (tortilla tax) flattens out. I certainly hope that the so-called champions of the poor “gente” in this state (that would be the progressive caucus) recognize that they are spoilers if they vote for this tax as they will have affected the dough (flour and water) and the dough (dollars in the consumer’s pocket.) Besides, what will the citizens do when they are no longer able to discern various Saints, landscapes and other objects as the appear on the surface of the white flour tortilla. We have all heard of the Virgin Mary or other religious icons being visible on white tortillas, but you’ll lose the ability to have these visions as people are forced to buy the more expensive and darker brown tortilla. Santa Fe truly has become “Dizzyland,” during this legislaive session.
