Probably not a lot of surprises, but what was done is much less than what was not done by our recently adjourned New Mexico State Legislature.

The following information from the Santa Fe New Mexican might be news you can use to figure what might happen in the special session that is forthcoming.

Just click here and find out what to cheer and what to jeer.  What is that, 30 days of sessions and 5 million dollars?

Certainly, all New Mexicans should be happy that those that seem to be” idjits” among our legislators, were not successful in taxing white tortillas and other staple items.

As they say, “it ain’t over, til it’s over.”  They will be back.

Five Muslim Soldiers Arrested On U.S. Base

US Army Training Center & Fort Jackson

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

Yes, you read it  right and by all accounts, the soldiers are members of the United States Army.  It is reported that the soldiers plotted to poison the food supply at Ft. Jackson in December.  The soldiers may be connected to the five individuals arrested in Pakistan in December according to this quote from a CBN New report:

A source with intimate knowledge of the investigation, which is ongoing, told CBN News investigators suspect the “Fort Jackson Five” may have been in contact with the group of five Washington, DC area Muslims that traveled to Pakistan to wage jihad against U.S. troops in December. That group was arrested by Pakistani authorities, also just before Christmas.

You can read what little there is in its entirety by clicking right here or you can follow any of the related links found below.

And, while we are on the subject of terrorists on our shores and in our very own armed forces, it is damning to our United States Attorney General that he wishes to try the captured terrorists from Guantanamo in civilian court.

Ride The GEE Route … It’s The Free Route

POSTED AS A COMMUNITY SERVICE BY GADABOUT-BLOGALOT

The following message was received from Ms. Christina Córdova, Director of Marketing and Communications for the North Central Regional Transit District.  Apparently the bus to and from Santa Fe from this area can use some more riders. Since the ride on the system and bus service is being paid for from a 1/8 cent gross receipts tax paid by Edgewood and area citizens, if you need to travel to Santa Fe and the schedule fits with your needs, you might consider taking advantage of the service. You can click on Copy of GEE SCHEDULE 01-04-10 to see the service schedule. It seems rather strange that there is no bus service listed for Edgewood, but there is service to Moriarty.  As we all know around here, Moriarty is in Torrance County and Torrance County does not pay the 1/8 cent gross receipts tax for the service.  Maybe there is an answer somewhere.  We’ll see,  I’m trying to obtain additional information from Ms. Córdova and will edit this appropriately.

EDITOR

Update: Ms Córdova has informed me this morning  that there is a reason why Edgewood is not on the stop, but I don’t believe it is valid.  Edgewood was taken off the route to try to increase the ridership in  the Moriarty area.  So anyone from Edgewood must travel to Moriarty to travel on the bus to points north.  Take that and bump it. As part of my on-going promotion of this Route, I got your e-mail address from Community Input Meetings sign in rosters hosted by the RTD which were held on September 9th & 10th,  2008.  I would love to hear if you are currently riding the GEE for FREE or why you may have stopped riding the bus into Santa Fe?   I would like to hear some feedback on the GEE Route and increase ridership along this corridor.

I would appreciate your time in responding to this e-mail and letting me know if  the GEE Route meets your commuting needs or not;  or please feel free to contact me at the numbers listed below if you would prefer to discuss the GEE Route with me at your earliest convenience.

Edgewood Library Announces Grant From WalMart

Don't Waste It

POSTED AS A COMMUNITY SERVICE BY GADABOUT-BLOGALOT

The Edgewood Community Library is proud to announce that we are the recipient of a $1,000 WalMart Community Grant!  Funds from this grant will be used to establish a Young Adult Book Club and to provide paperback books to its participants at the Edgewood Community Library.  This free program is open exclusively to teens residing in the East Mountain Area who may be interested in young adult contemporary literature.  The Young Adult Book Club will meet every Tuesday evening from 6:00pm to 7:00pm throughout the school year.  Registration will be held for each new session (new book) and limited to the first fifteen participants.  Guided open discussion, concerning the assigned reading, will occur each meeting to encourage critical thinking and analysis on a mature level.  We are in the process of collaborating with the Moriarty High School English Department in offering this program as an extra credit opportunity for students.

Here is a succinct breakdown of the program details:

  • Program will start in September 2010
  • Books will be chosen from contemporary Young Adult Literature
  • Book Club will meet 4 times a month on Tuesdays 6-7pm during the school year
  • FREE for all participants
  • Open to teens only
  • Limited to 15 max
  • Registration will be held for each new session (new book)
  • Guided open discussion will occur each meeting to encourage mature critical thinking and analysis

I am really excited about starting this program because there are very few educational programs dedicated to young adults in the community outside of the classroom!

Of Helping Hands And MSM Bull Butter

Camp Buehring, Kuwait - Alaska Governor Sarah ...

By Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009 – 2010)

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

Much was made of Sarah Palin‘s use of hand-written hand notes during her speech at the recent Tea Party Convention in Nashville.  The MSM was all aflutter as they excoriated Ms. Palin’s aptitude for public speaking.  Here’s a search return on Sarah Palin Hand Notes from one of the major search engines.

It was left up to the folks at BreitbartTV and FoxNews to uncover Democrat Diane Feinstein’s nefarious use of hand notes during a debate for the California governor’s race way back when.  Yes, way back when she was a candidate to be California’s leader.

It happens that Palin was giving a speech and was brilliantly using her hand as both a “palm pilot” and a miniature teleprompter.  It also happens that Feinstein was using a cheat-sheet since her use of notes was in violation of debate rules.  Two different uses of the written word.  One ingenious … the other just plain fraud.

Here are the search results for Senator Feinstein’s cheating hand.  You might want to watch the BreitbartTV/FoxNews information here.

Fun Family Fotos Offers Inexpensive Portraits

IN THE INTEREST OF PROMOTING NEW BUSINESSES IN EDGEWOOD AND THE SURROUNDING AREA, GADABOUT-BLOGALOT IS OFFERING TO POST SHORT ARTICLES PERTAINING TO THOSE BUSINESSES AT NO CHARGE.  WE WILL CONTINUE THIS PRACTICE ON A ONE-TIME BASIS FOR EACH BUSINESS SO LONG AS WE ARE ABLE.

A new portrait photography business, Fun Family Fotos, is now serving the Estancia Valley and East Mountains.

Owner of the home-based business and amateur photographer Leota Harriman hopes to provide a service different enough from traditional portrait studios to be attractive in tough economic times.

A half-hour sitting can have as many clothing changes or subjects as the client desires at no extra charge, recognizing that means fewer photographs. The sitting fee is $25 for half an hour, and can be extended in half-hour increments at half the price.

The photos will then be uploaded to funfamilyfotos.zenfolio.com, where a variety of print options is available.

Everything from magnets and keychains to large-scale wall mounts are available at reasonable prices on the website. Print when and what you want. The royalty-free personal use license means that while Fun Family Fotos retains the copyright, you are in control of your photographs.

For those without access to the Internet, a CD of the photographs will be available for purchase; photos may  then be printed at your convenience.

From a family of photographers, Harriman finally got bitten by the shutterbug taking pictures for The Independent. “I enjoy photographing people, and my aim is a relaxed environment that will let you be yourself.”

To learn more about Fun Family Fotos, visit funfamilyfotos.zenfolio.com, call 702-1033 or email leota@q.com.

The Tortilla, Another White Meat

Tortillas being made in Old Town San Diego.

By Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009 – 2010)

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

Astounded am I, and chagrined too, over some of our legislator’s insensitive and yes, ignorant attempt to place a tax on white flour tortillas.  Any New Mexican with a modicum of sense and vision would recognize that tortillas of the white flour variety are a staple among many families in New Mexico.  The white flour tortilla is color and race blind as it is enjoyed by all New Mexico citizens no matter their color, sex, sexual preference, or national origin.

Look, the white flour tortilla is sacrosanct in New Mexico; second only to low property taxes.  The tortilla, white bread, and peanut butter are each a  major food group in and of themselves and any politician that fails to recognize this cultural and almost scientific fact will certainly see their political career vanish.  If a representative or senator conspires to place this unfair burden on all New Mexicans, they tax at their own risk. Not only will this flat bread (tortilla) tax have an effect on every consumer in New Mexico, but people will buy fewer tortillas and this will have a huge effect on the manufacturers of tortillas.

Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to wait to see how this TT (tortilla tax) flattens out.  I certainly hope that the so-called champions of the poor “gente” in this state (that would be the progressive caucus) recognize that they are spoilers if they vote for this tax as they will have affected the dough (flour and water) and the dough (dollars in the consumer’s pocket.)  Besides, what will the citizens do when they are no longer able to discern various Saints, landscapes and other objects as the appear on the surface of the white flour tortilla.  We have all heard of the Virgin Mary or other religious icons being visible on white tortillas, but you’ll lose the ability to have these visions as people are forced to buy the more expensive and darker brown tortilla.  Santa Fe truly has become “Dizzyland,” during this legislaive session.

You Want Your Say — You Have To Play…In Edgewood, New Mexico

Edgewood, NM 87015

By Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009 – 2010)

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

We won’t get personal or get into naming places and faces, but a referendum held in a small village passed with a total (pro and con) 14 votes being cast.  Was the bond issue for a good purpose?  Like all bond issues it depends on points of view of the folks participating.  Trouble is, with this referendum, 14 total votes from a population of what … 100?  That would be 14 percent , but the truth is tougher to take than the low percentage of the total vote in the example given.

Eleven people voted for the issue, while 3 voted against the issue.  The bond amount was a cool million bucks, the school district has around 300 students and the total population of the district is 1000 souls, not 100.  Property taxes will increase, with folks that paid $1000 in property taxes last year paying an extra $10.57  in addition for the term of the bond.

Edgewood has two bond issues coming up.  If one or both pass, Edgewood property taxes will increase.  The passing of the bonds may be seen as favorable by some and not desired by others.  Whatever the citizens’ preference might be, we believe it is important for every person affected to understand the benefits of the bond’s purposes and downside, if any, to a property tax increase.

We’re not trying to be coy or evasive, but if you want to find out about the bond issues it is best that you check the details for yourself.  You can find the details by going here. Should you desire, you can print the information brochure and use it in discussions with friends and neighbors.

Back to the story on the school district that passed a million dollar bond by a margin of 11 votes out of a total of 14 votes cast, you can read all about it here.

Educate yourself about Edgewood’s bond issues and decide which way you wish to cast your ballots.  Just don’t be someone who later regrets the result of the bond election because you didn’t vote.  Remember, Edgewood made the national news when a tied election had to be decided by a game of chance.  Yes Virginia, one vote really can make a difference.
