According to Yahoo!®News and AFP Bill Gates and Toshiba are in discussions for the development of small nuclear reactor.  The story indicates that Gates and Toshiba will focus on developing such a reactor that will be able to operate for 100 years without replenishment of fuel:

The Nikkei business daily earlier reported that the two sides would team up to develop a compact next-generation reactor that can operate for up to 100 years without refueling to provide emission-free energy.

The daily said the joint development would focus on the Traveling-Wave Reactor (TWR), which consumes depleted uranium as fuel. Current light-water reactors require refueling every few years.

Gates’ company is TerraPower and they have been working to develop their own nuclear power package plant.  With the potential partnership between the two entities, perhaps technology will be exchanged which will roll out a completed product much sooner than would be expected without the cooperative effort.

Toshiba is not only Toshiba, but it is also Westinghouse:

Toshiba, which owns US nuclear plant maker Westinghouse, has developed a design for an ultracompact reactor that can operate continuously for 30 years.

The company is preparing to apply for US approval to start constructing the first such reactor as early as 2014 and put it into practical use by the end of the decade, Ohmori said.

Are There Pro-Life Democrats … Have To Be Somewhere

A monument dedicated to the unborn victims of ...
Image via Wikipedia

Phyllis Schlafly doesn’t think so given Bart Stupak‘s (D-MI) flip-flop, turn-around, give the dog a bone action in his agreement to vote for the health bill in the House of Representatives.  Ms. Schlafly, it is reported in Yahoo PRNewswire-USNewswire had the following and more to say about the true feelings of Stupak:

It is naive for any elected official, especially one who describes himself as ‘pro-life,’ to expect that a promise to issue an Executive Order that reasserts the intentions of the Hyde Amendment will be fulfilled by the most pro-abortion president to ever sit in the White House. Perhaps Mr. Stupak and his fellow pro-life Democrats forget that President Obama’s first Executive Order was the repeal of the Mexico City Policy to allow for international funding of abortion.

Ms. Schlafly, further twists the knife as she explains that this President has installed in his cabinet, dedicated, march in lockstep abortion ideologues and one should not expect that he will not do the same to fill the vacancies in the over 100 bureaucracies created by his misguided and surely to be, misapplied health care program.

Ms. Schlafly quotes further with what some would say is a damning indictment of the Democratic party:

“Mr. Stupak and his Democrat followers have now clarified that you cannot be pro-life and be a Democrat.  If abortion was truly their biggest issue, they wouldn’t willfully align themselves with the Party of Death.”

“This vote will expose the myth of the ‘pro-life Democrat.’  With this single vote, the Democratic Party will divide our nation into the Party of Death and the Party of Life, and future elections will never be the same.”

I have friends, who profess to be conservative, and say that the problem with pro-life issues is that they are “so” divisive.  Yes, they probably are more divisive in a political way than most of us can or might want to deal with, but the most “divisive” part of abortion is that it divides the child from the mother in a most permanent way … that is, forever.  And, the child cannot speak for himself or herself, and has no spokesperson in the scheme.

A Bunch Of Police Brains Without Thought

4 Gold Stars

Not again officer … oh, you have cheesecake. Well, in that case … how about a glass of milk to go with it, Chief?

This is what Mr. and Mrs. Walter Martin might have said to the New York City Police Chief when he brought a cheesecake and an apology and explanation of what prompted his department to visit the octogenarians over many years and make many demands to “open up” as they identified themselves as “police.”

Your unreasonable intrusion in our lives should cost you much more than what you brought to our home.  Starting in 2002, you visited our home and made demands that we, “open up” while you banged on the front and rear doors.   Let’s see, was that one time, or ten times.  Oh heck, turns out it was fifty times you came and beat on our doors and insisted on entering.

Caused by a computer glitch, you say.  We say, caused by a brain drain from  the exodus of common sense in the New York Police Department. Maybe from Special Operations or the IT section, or any number of other hidden in the basement programs that someone forgot to manage.

This just seems to be the last (hopefully) of many  incidents caused when ignorant people — in this case, police? — may not care to care … or, not care enough.  God Bless this old couple for what they have been through and how they reacted, which apparently was with more than a small amount of grace.

You can read the complete story and see their simple home by clicking here and here.  We forgot to mention that this (this series) is not the first time the Martin house has been the victim of such episodes as you will see if you read the second story.

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

Today we learn from the New Mexico Business Weekly that there is now a database for the over 6000 nonprofits in New Mexico.  The completed project is the result of work by the Center For Nonprofit Excellence and partial funding for the Con Alma Health Foundation.

The directory is provided for the use of those wishing to volunteer or donate to nonprofits.  It is also to be used by nonprofits to connect to other nonprofits for cooperation and collaboration. If you belong to a nonprofit which is not currently in the directory, you can add your information at the website.

Altogether, the  directory appears to be a comprehensive resource which can be searched by New Mexico’s regions, counties and municipalities AND by mission of the nonprofit through keyword searches.

This resource can also act as a verification database as to the validity of  a nonprofit’s solicitations.

Check this one out: click here John Weckerle at NM-Central posted it in his comment.

Looking For The Science Of It

Popular Science
Image via Wikipedia

Every once in a while a diamond is found in a pig track and today while I was plinking around I found a website called Dark Roasted Blend.  I would suppose that its main claim to fame would be furnishing curious and interesting websites for folks such as myself, whom seem to have more time than skill or brains.

One of the websites provided on Dark Roasted Blend is one that transports the virtual traveler to a pile of Popular Science magazines which start in the year 1870 that is billed as “more than 100 years of Popular Science magazine.”   I went to the website and verified that it was a project of Google® Books and eventually settled on choosing a Popular Science magazine from May 1910 and an article titled Ancient Climate of the West Coast.

I’m more than a little sure that I could find many more articles on climate change searching further back in time and publications, but I didn’t start my search with climate change on my mind and my eyes just randomly fell on the article linked above.  Now that I’ve provided the above links, it is my hope that folks on both sides of the climate change battle will come and gently plunk their thoughts down in the comments.  Sort of, lead in and tell us whether this article contains information that may be relative to today and the future … and, don’t forget the past.  After all, the article is about “Ancient.”

I have to confess, I feel like a little red dog I had.  It was his habit to start fights between his larger dog friends and then back off and watch the battles.

Mr. Gibbs and Other Lib Glibs

Seal of the President of the United States
Image via Wikipedia

By Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009 – 2010)

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

Mr. Gibbs, the Presidents press secretary, has had many opportunities to practice his glibness in recent weeks.  It looks as though he may have “glibbed” himself into very dangerous territory.  If yesterday’s story from The American Spectator is any gauge for what glib is or might be, then he has a lot of glib disposal to attend to — that is, he needs to come clean and bring the rest of the President’s smug partners in crime along to their appointment with Nixsonian destiny.

It seems that Mr. Gibbs can’t find the answers to questions about the possibility that individuals were offered jobs by the White House in return for political obedience (otherwise known as, ” going along with.”)  Gibbs and his obvious refusal to tell what he knows cannot be anything other than classic stonewalling.

Now the Specter that is Specter has come into the game and was quoted by The American Spectator on March 12th as saying:

There’s a crime called misprision of a felony. Misprision of a felony is when you don’t report a crime. So you’re getting into pretty deep areas here in these considerations.

The American Spectator article is replete with other suppositions by officials and it is a packed virtual six pages of interesting reading and “what ifs” for the fans of intrigue and other political games.  To read the article in its entirety, along with some fairly heated comments, click here.
