Qwest Walks To Louisiana — Makes It To Monroe

Monroe, Louisiana

By Chuck Ring (GadaboutBlogalot ©2009 – 2010)

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

We’re playing a little here with an old Fats Domino Song, Walking To New Orleans because Qwest Communications Inc, which has taken several permutations in name and organization, has been sold to a Louisiana Company (Century Tel Inc.)  Of course, the New Mexico Public Regulations Commission, must dilly and dally to make sure that the transaction will properly serve New Mexico citizens.  Then the other affected states and federal regulatory authorities will have their try at approval or rejection of the deal.  At some future date we’ll learn the fate  of the deal and see whether it will be beneficial to New Mexico citizens and other folks in this nation.

Meanwhile, here’s the story as we found it from New Mexico Business Weekly (click here.)  There are some excellent links to follow that should provide a better understanding as to what this means to Qwest employees, stockholders and management.  We sure hope it  will do something to improve their broadband offering in the Estancia Valley as regards more speed and lower price.  Although what is offered now is preferable to the offering several years in the past.

As to difficulties facing both companies, the dogs of litigation (perhaps pigs of litigation) are out to sniff or root out the improprieties of the deal, if they are there, or perhaps if they can be made to seem as though they exist. The links below the quote underneath this paragraph shows evidence of the hunt — whether canine or porcine  driven.

“Look at these companies. They reached settlements [with regulators] and then faced humongous claims in the private litigation.”

Campaign Information For Charlie Dalton — Candidate for Sheriff (Santa Fe County)

POSTED AS A COMMUNITY SERVICE BY GADABOUT-BLOGALOT

I have made an offer for political candidates to provide information for posting on this blog. See the offer here.

I have just received information from Charlie Dalton, candidate  for Sheriff of Santa Fe County.  Mr. Dalton is a member of the Democratic Party, as are all candidates for Sheriff in Santa fe County.  I have copied the information I received from Mr. Dalton just below.

Charlie Dalton for Sheriff #3 on the Ballot.

Hello my name is Charlie Dalton and I am running for Santa Fe County Sheriff. I retired from the Santa Fe Police Department after 23 years of service. I worked as a Traffic Division Lieutenant, Juvenile Detective Sergeant, Burglary and Narcotics Task Force Detective, and Police Community Relations/Crime Prevention Officer. I am a graduate of the Police Staff and Command School at Northwestern University as well as a graduate of the Delinquency Control Institute at the University of Southern California. After retirement, I was a Reserve Deputy where I volunteered a number years helping patrol the county of Santa Fe.

In order to make Santa Fe County a safer place to live and raise a family, we must garner a spirit of cooperation with all areas of government as well as in the private sector. No matter what the organization, the entire community is an integral part of a successful law enforcement entity. By working together, we can make our goal of a Safer Community attainable. I will push towards making the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department the best professional Law Enforcement agency it can be, by employing the most up-to-date methods of training for all personnel under my supervision. Above all, I will insist that everyone who interacts with the community, act with a high degree of respect, trustworthiness, and integrity.

My administration will be a true team effort and partnership. Our collective efforts will help us all succeed. The staff and I will strive on a daily basis to be professional and responsive to the needs of the entire county community. I truly care about people and this is why I seek the office of Santa Fe County Sheriff. Registered voters in both the City and County of Santa Fe can vote for Sheriff of Santa Fe County.

“YOUR SAFTEY IS MY PRIORITY” is not only a campaign slogan – it is a commitment!

Please visit my web site at www.charliedalton.org for more information on my qualifications.

I appreciate your vote on June 1, 2010. Charlie Dalton for Sheriff #3 on the Ballot.

Roadrunner Food Distribution & Civitan Clothing Distribution (4/22/10)

POSTED AS A COMMUNITY SERVICE BY GADABOUT-BLOGALOT

Hello Everyone-

First off, I’m sorry if I’ve duplicated this e-mail to anyone-I lost all of my contacts and had to reestablish the list. Hopefully, everything will be back on track next month.  Roadrunner Food Bank is providing the food and we will distribute it on April 22nd from 5:00-7:00 pm to anyone needing help.  I’ve attached the flier.  If you know of anyone that might benefit from this program, please let them know.  I’m also asking for help passing the flier out or distributing it to businesses or churches.  I won’t be able to hit every church or business and I know they will be a valuable resource in reaching families that can benefit from the pantry. This month, we will have enough food to feed 150 families.

A little bit about the program:
We are paying a shared maintenance fee of $.05 a pound for the food.
$125 will buy 2500 pounds of food, allowing 50 families to receive 50 pounds of food each.
There are no income restraints-anyone needing the food is welcome.
All donations will go back into buying food from Roadrunner Food Bank.

At the bottom of the e-mail, there is a link to a video Roadrunner made about the necessity of mobile food pantries.

Results from last month:

154 families were served.

There were 528 people in those 154 households.

Thank you to our sponsors- Valley View Church and the Ring Family.

We also had 40+ volunteers-the pantry wouldn’t have been successful without their help.

Valley View Church has once again offered their space for the event and Allen Elliot brought cases of food for our distribution this month.  Thank you, sponsors!

In the eleven months this pantry has been operational, 4395 people in 1221 households have been recipients of food from Roadrunner. Thank you for all of your support, we couldn’t operate without help and donations from others.

New this month:

The Edgewood Civitan Club has organized a pancake breakfast with the proceeds benefitting the Edgewood Mobile Food Pantry.  It will be held at Katrinah’s East Mountain Grill from 7-11am on May 1st. Take your  family out for a wonderful breakfast and help fund our program!  (See attached flier)

Edgewood Mobile Food Pantry is happily joining with the Edgewood Civitan Club to provide a free clothing exchange. We are currently in need of children’s summer clothes. You can drop your donations at Rich Ford, the Edgewood Chamber of Commerce and Valley View Christian Church.  Please see the attachment for more details.  We welcome the opportunity to expand the services available to the community.  Thank you, Edgewood Civitans, for providing such a valuable service!

If anyone is interested in helping by either volunteering their time or sponsoring the event, please contact me.  My phone number is 281-5364.

Last, but not least, the following link is to a video from Roadrunner.  It’s a great video and some of our clients are featured.

Tea Parties, Here’s Some Fact Checks On Federal Insurance

A surgical team from Wilford Hall Medical Cent...
Image via Wikipedia

It is very easy … we might say tempting, to believe and pass on, information received via email or website posts and sites.  The Tea Party has been taken to task about some statements regarding what is found  in “Mother Health” (the bill passed in Congress over much objection.)  We have reported on the bogus claims before on more than one occasion, but it seems the bogus information continues.

There are several sites that attempt to set straight, the “malarkey,” sown by some, with refutations posted on the internet and distributed electronically to subscribers.  One such organization is Fact Check.org.  This informative site is a project funded by The Annenberg Public Policy Center.  Lest you be concerned about the Annenberg family being shills for the left, you should know that they contribute almost exclusively to Republican and conservative causes and campaigns.  In case you doubt the Annenberg’s political leaning you can check this website.

In a summary article appearing on Fact Check.org, presented as,  ’More Malarkey About Health Care,” they share some examples of  misinformation distributed and passed on by Tea Parties and other conservative groups.  They begin by saying:

We’ve seldom seen a piece of legislation so widely misrepresented, and misunderstood, as the new health care law. We stopped counting the number of articles and items we turned out on the subject after the total reached 100.

They give examples in the summary that are far-ranging and seem pretty silly:

  • Requires patients to be implanted with microchips. (No, it doesn’t.)
  • Cuts benefits for military families and retirees. (No. The TRICARE program isn’t affected.)
  • Exempts Muslims from the requirement to obtain coverage. (Not specifically. It does have a religious exemption, but that is intended for Old Order Amish.)
  • Allows insurance companies to continue denying coverage to children with preexisting conditions. (Insurance companies have agreed not to exploit a loophole that might have allowed this.)
  • Will require 16,500 armed IRS agents to enforce. (No. Criminal penalties are waived.)
  • Gives President Obama a Nazi-like “private army.” (No. It provides a reserve corps of doctors and other health workers for emergencies.)
  • “Exempts” House and Senate members. (No. Their coverage may not be as good as before, in fact.)
  • Covers erectile-dysfunction drugs for sex offenders. (Just as it was before the new law, those no longer in jail can buy any insurance plan they choose.
  • Provides federal funding for abortions. (Not directly. But neither side in the abortion debate is happy with the law.
  • There is a much expanded analysis to be found in the article just below the above bulleted items.  You can study them here with a click

Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone

Through the ages … well at least since Americans and others before, started drinking the brew, comments about the taste of the substance have often referred to its similarity to a waste product.  We’re speaking of America’s and some other nation’s favorite beverage.  Who has not said, “This coffee, tastes like c–p!”  Whether off the shelf and home-brewed or purchased and consumed in a specialty coffee-house, coffee is often the subject of vile, less than favorable comments.  There could be many reasons for the insults and epithets, but a writer for the New York Times (NYT) may have found a reason.

Norimitsu Onishi‘s article appeared on April 17th and was both revealing and curious.  Here is a quote from close to the beginning of the article:

Reaching a valley where coffee trees were growing abundantly, he scanned the undergrowth where he knew the animals would relax after picking the most delicious coffee cherries with their claws and feasting on them with their fangs. His eyes settled on a light, brownish clump atop a rock. He held it in his right palm and, gently slipping it into a little black pouch, whispered:

    “Gold!”

From this point on and to the end of the article, we learn much about rare coffees — perhaps very much more than some readers would really want or care to know:

Not quite. But Mr. Sibayan’s prize was the equivalent in the world of rarefied coffees: dung containing the world’s most expensive coffee beans.

Speaking as a coffee drinker that prefers coffee which is “bold” and dark, the revelations found in Onishi’s piece will give me pause for reflection and investigation when I purchase coffee.  I’m sure that I will now want to check the coffee’s origin and will think twice or maybe three times before deciding on whether to buy anything flowing from the Philippines.  Readers of this article may well want to explore and discover the wonders of this brew, which surely must require that the consumer of this coffee must acquire a preference for it while thinking of anything other than its path to the consumer’s palate.  The price of the stuff will probably be the first of many considerations:

Costing hundreds of dollars a pound, these beans are found in the droppings of the civet, a nocturnal, furry, long-tailed catlike animal that prowls Southeast Asia’s coffee-growing lands for the tastiest, ripest coffee cherries. …

Hopefully, readers of this article and Onishi’s excellent adventurous account will cause the reader to think, “Well, I never would have considered such.”  You can consume the entire NYT piece by clicking on “coffee for thee, but not for me”, where you will learn everything you might want to know about Civit coffee.
