Quote Freely From The Article – Leave The Pseudonym Alone
The Chronicle Of Higher Education reports a former United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, and now President of the University of Miami was detained in Israel last month as she attempted to board a flight back to the United States after attending a conference in Israel:
University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala was detained and interrogated for two hours at Ben-Gurion Airport on her way back to the U.S. after a visit to Israel last month, according to the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth. She was subjected to a “humiliating” security debriefing because of her Arab last name, the newspaper reports.
In an update to the story, Ms. Shalala of Lebanese heritage, had this to say:
UPDATE: Ms. Shalala issued the following statement about the incident after this article was published: “While I was inconvenienced, Israel’s security and the security of travelers is far more important. I have been going in and out of Israel for many years and expect to visit again.”
Through the title to this article, I have indicated that I believe Ms. Shalala’s actions rise to A Class Act. I say so because, although she could have reacted as some of our congress members have reacted when they have been requested to turn off a cellular phone or otherwise comply with the same regulations the hoi polloi comply with, day in and day out, she chose the high road.
That’s my reason and I’m sticking with it. You can read the rest of the piece here and access other information from links found below.
