Commissioner Wayne Johnson Welcomes Community to Celebrate Route 66 History
Free Event at Carlito Springs Open Space Sept. 8
Bernalillo County – Commissioner Wayne Johnson today welcomed the community to celebrate the colorful history of Route 66 at the Carlito Springs Open Space on Sept. 8.
This free Saturday event is sponsored by Bernalillo County’s Open Space program and features three presentations by Route 66 experts, a walking tour, food and music throughout the day.
“We’re lucky to have two wonderful historical resources in the East Mountains to celebrate – both Route 66 and Carlito Springs Open Space,” Commissioner Wayne Johnson says. “This is a great chance for the community to come together and enjoy the culture and history that make New Mexico great.”
Carlito Springs is a 179-acre open space located near Tijeras in the East Mountains featuring historic buildings and an orchard, among other features. Parking is limited, so county staff will shuttle visitors from the A. Montoya Elementary School located at 24 Public School Road. The shuttle occurs from 8:30-9:40 a.m.
- Baker H. Morrow, a professor and historian, will present the history of Carlito Springs and the role Route 66 played in its development.
- Kaisa Barthuli, director of the National Park Service’s Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, who will offer an overview of Route’s 66 history and significance.
- David Dunaway, an oral historian and professor, will present stories about people along the route and his book, “A Route 66 Companion.”
The walking tour begins at 12:30 p.m. Snacks and refreshments are provided.
