Edgewood Chamber Friday Blast 6/14/13

             June 14, 2013
M.

    Your Chamber,
Working for you…
Membership Luncheon
A special thank you to John Helmich and Karen Takai from EMIFPA for their very informative talk about how to prepare for the fires in the East Mountains.  They gave us a detailed check list, which helps to organize an evacuation, as well as preparation…what to think about…BEFORE an evacuation is called by the Sheriff’s department.  These lists are at the Visitor’s center at the South entrance to the Library.  Just stop by and pick one up, and while you’re doing that, bring your business cards and company brochures, publications, etc. to place there.  It is a privilege of membership. And a huge thank you for the fabulous lunch…the salad bar was on of the best we have ever eaten!
Looking for volunteers for the Chamber office.  If you have a couple of hours per week, and would like to help staff the chamber office, we’d love to have you.

 Ponderings:
I don’t know about you, but with all of the events coming up at the Chamber in August and September, papers seem to be growing in piles on my desk as notes and plans and agendas are created.  In order to grab back control of my workspace, I went to my favorite “help desk” to get the 5 W’S OF CLUTTER CONTROL:
When confronting a potential piece of paper clutter, always ask aloud:
1. What is this?
2. Why would I want to keep it?
3. When will I need it?
4. Where would I look for it?
5. Who else might have it?
This is a focusing exercise – asking the questions aloud forces me to focus on the paper in my hand. About 50% of the time the answer is
throw the paper away.  The other 50% of the time I discover that I need to file, act on it immediately, or pass it on to someone else.

If you are a chamber member, you can leave your business cards, rack cards and flyers at the Visitors center inside the South door to the Library. Be sure to get your information over here. It’s part of your benefit as an Edgewood Chamber member!

STOP MULTITASKING
running it again in an effort to stop multi tasking myself and for those who ignored the wisdom last week.

No, seriously, STOP.
Switching from task to task quickly, does not work.
In fact, changing tasks more than 10 times in a day
makes you dumber than being stoned.  When a person is stoned, their IQ drops by five points.
When you multitask, it drops by an average of 10 points, 15 for men, five for women (yes, men are three times as bad at multitasking than women).
note from MH…duh.

   SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS:
The East Mountain Guide, an online magazine about the people who live, work, play or visit the East Mountain area has launched.
Anne Rich has been building and promoting  online businesses since 1999, and started working on the the East Mountain Guide in 2009.
“I’ve specialized in reaching new customers online for over a decade so I know how to use my skills to help local businesses, organizations, and individuals get their message out.
I grew up working for our family business and understand the need for reaching new customers while still running your business.  Businesses understand they should ‘get online’, but most hang a website, post on facebook or Craig’s List and then call it quits. Online marketing is proven to work for local business when done correctly,
but the time, learning curve and expense makes doing it successfully difficult for many businesses.
The East Mountain Guide is structured as a magazine to showcase our partners, but it is much more than a website, it is a way for local businesses to  stay within their budget, and reach their targeted audience while using my skills and experience!”
The East Mountain Guide is offering Edgewood Chamber members a FREE three month business listing.  Please go to
http://www.eastmountainguide.com/pages/chamber and follow the directions.
If you would like further information or need help, call Anne Rich at 926-1294.

    Your Chamber,
Working for you…

Sorry to be late this week,  especially for those of you who actually look for the blast at 6:30 on Friday mornings (I know who both of you are.)  Also, please remember that upcoming monthly events are ALWAYS listed on the right side panel in the Blast, and you can always check back if you are wondering when an event will take place!
Yesterday’s first Leadership Edgewood 12 class was a great success at least according to the class surveys taken after the class.  We enjoyed great discussions, learned a bit about each other, participated in planning, and began to come together as a thinking, acting group!
Thanks to Brenda Murray, LE2012 Director, Lori Harris, Saul Araque, and Martha Eden…your hard work was very apparent at yesterday’s session!  Many thanks to our presenters yesterday.  We got a great deal of good and useful infromaton.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
A Big Thanks to ReMax Western Heritage, Ray Seagers,  for a very interesting and fun Chamber Mixer last evening! At least three of our town candidates attended, and it was good to get a chance to discuss isues with them, as well as visit with our members.
The food was abundant and tasted wonderful…loved that fruit tray, Martha!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

HISTORICAL TRIVIA:
Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important.  Since there were no telephones, TV’s or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars.  They were told to “go sip” some ale and listen to people’s conversations and political concerns.  Many assistants were dispatched at different times.
“You go sip here”, and “you go sip there.”
The two words “go sip” were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus (are you ready?) we have the term

ECOC Friday Blast (10/28/11)

POSTED AS A COMMUNITY SERVICE BY GADABOUT-BLOGALOT

Friday Blast
October 28, 2011

Your Chamber – working for you…

Did I say it was busy last week? I was misinformed.  This week was amazing as we prepare for our big

Masquerade Extraordinaire this Saturday  October 29 at
Nature Pointe!

The reason behind all of this preparation is a fundraiser, but even more, it’s a chance for members to get together to enjoy each other’s company in a light hearted and enjoyable way.

The great folks at Nature Pointe have turned over the facility to us beginning at 1pm, where ticketed  members can come and enjoy the many amenities of the Club House.  We have the indoor saltwater pool available between 1 and 4pm, as well as a huge and rather outstanding billiard table (we have been told that Patrick Thompson plans to run the table..any challengers out there?

When it’s time to begin the evening festivities, we have well appointed dressing rooms available to us to get into costume (or not).

Sierra Blanca Brewery and St. Claire Winery/SW Wines have donated the beverage for our cocktails  and Pepsi has donated a mix of soft drinks, as well as water for those who would rather not drink.

The silent auction  includes dance lessons, Gaited Horse riding lessons and a trail ride,  a lovely basket filled with hand knit wearables, each a perfect Christmas present,  a hand hewn wooden bread box, also hand painted on the lid, a beautiful necklace and earring set created by a local artist, even an opportunity to get your teeth cleaned and examined!

We will enjoy dinner from JR’s Catering, and then
our awards for members who have stood out this year.

The live auction  includes a hot air balloon ride,

pistol training or concealed carry permit training,

a tiffany inspired faux stained glass decorative bowl, 2 beautiful paintings done by Edgewood artists,  design and development of your website and mobile site…   and it goes on and on.

The auctions will be over by 7 and then the dancing begins, as well as the costume contest.

We’re looking forward to a great evening, and know that all who attend will enjoy their time.   We still have a few tickets left, so call Madeline today and we will make sure you can join us!  850-2523

Annual Chamber Banquet
Just got the last cow pen put away, and now we’re planning for our October 29 dinner.
We were thrilled to see 15 people show up to join committees  to make our largest event a big success.
Misty Miller from SASS and Robin Markely from Beehive Homes are chairing the Auction, and will be getting in touch with members and friends to gather good auction items.
Please be sure to consider donating something that represents your business or service to its best advantage.   It’s your chance to shine in front of the rest of the membership… don’t miss out!
For most of the year we raise money to help our causes  (The Bill Gilmore Scholarship Award, the COW Awards…) which help other members of the community.   The Annual Dinner and Auction is our Chamber fundraiser to help make the ECOC a stronger support for our business community.
